a few weekends ago, i made the trip from Toledo to Columbus with my younger sister and brother and sprout to run a half marathon. i ran my first half last fall the day after the buckeyes home opener. since then, i’ve run a marathon and two other half marathons. i’ve really come to enjoy the race day atmosphere and having a reason to stay in shape.
the race was a lot of fun since we had a great group run and some friends came out to support us at the finish. however, the weekend really became interesting when one of our friends mentioned that columbus eatery, thurman’s cafe, was on the show man vs food. now, i must confess to never having watched man vs food before. but our comrade, told us that thurman’s has an epic burger, dubbed the thurman-ator, made of two huge beef patties, ham, grilled onions, bacon, and all sorts of delicious toppings. my brother DR, who is currently training for the madison ironman, has an absolutely insatiable appetite from all of this training. i knew DR had to conquer this mytical thurman-ator.
after the race we cleaned up and headed to thurman’s cafe in the german village. their menu is absolutely amazing. they have so many different burger options. they all looked amazing. however, DR and i didn’t need to look at the menu. we were ordering one thing – the thurman-ator.
this burger is incredible. i have never tried to eat anything so massive in my life. look at that thing! it’s as big as DR’s head! i’m not even sure the physics of fitting that monstrosity in your stomach is sound. but sure enough, as with most competitive devices, once the challenge is laid, it must be met. DR devoured the Thurman-ator with ease, ate all of his fries, and even nibbled on table scraps. the thurman-ator took me to the limit. i barely finished that last bite. i was a few ounces of beef away from giving it all back to thurman’s.
Columbus is a great city because of places like thurman’s. you should definitely check out the full man vs. food episode if you can find it. the episode gave DR a few more locations in Columbus to challenge his appetite this fall when we’re in town for the home games.
when you get a chance, stop by and try a thurman burger. if you sit in the second to last booth in the back and find my business card on the wall, take a photo of yourself next to it and send it my way (john@jupmode.com). i’ll send you a free gift.
